Hand Crafted Rings: How your Ring is Made

Each ring undergoes a series of processes whereby the design is hand drawn onto the rings' surface (in reverse), the metal is then carved away (incised) using hand tools, designed and handmade for each specific task, and then finally polished by hand producing a totally unique seal.

We at HistoricalNames.com are sure that you will be amazed at the brilliant artistry, skill and sheer beauty of the finished seal ring.

"I am more than impressed with the ring and the stamp! Both are exquisite, masterful, and beautiful! The compliments seem to be endless, and the stamp was a perfect touch for the Christmas envelopes! The customer service is likewise impressive, as well as the fast shipping. They came much sooner than I had expected. I thank you for everything, and you can be assured that I'll be back ;)"

"Stephen, please add me to your wonderful list of very happy customers! I know that you went out of your way to ensure that my son's ring arrived well before the date we needed it. I couldn't believe it when the package arrived today! I was probably the most nervous customer you ever had (I don't usually spend this kind of money online!), and I want to thank you for your patience in answering all my many questions! As you know, the reason I placed the order late was that I was busy shopping around on the internet and going to jewelry stores in town trying to compare quality and pricing. I wasn't able to find anything to compare with what your company provides and I could have saved myself a lot of time and effort by ordering with you from day one.

As for the ring, what can I say? IT IS BEAUTIFUL. The color and luster of the gold are very rich and the coat of arms looks even better than we imagined. It is a wonderful, quality piece of jewelry.  This ring is a gift for my son's 21st birthday."

You are quality all the way with the amazing craftsmanship you provide! We will definitely be returning to you to get another 3 rings done in the near future! "Wow Stephen. You and your team did a phenomenal job on the two custom signet rings that I ordered online. One being from a small wax mold impression and the other from a photograph, I was stunned at the level of detail that they both had and the speed with which you delivered them. You have created an heirloom that my wife and I can hand down to our children with pride. Thank you for all of your outstanding customer service. You'll be hearing from me again. Cheers,"

Raising your Son on Ethics and Values

Making the Modern Day Knight

"I could not be more pleased with the high quality of the products and the service we received from this company. We ordered a family crest ring and canvas to use in a manhood ceremony for my eldest son, modeled after the book by Robert Lewis "Raising a Modern Day Knight." Every place we had been to before had been entirely unhelpful because we had a very common last name and didn't know what country we came from. Although we had finally decided on a generic crest, Stephen spent extra time asking about our needs, and with a few clues from our past helped us to actually find a crest and motto that were truly from our family's heritage. As part of the ceremony, my son used his ring to affix his seal on the canvas as the sign of his commitment to our family and a pledge to uphold our values. The personal attention leading and the beautiful craftsmanship of my sons custom-made ring made this ceremony that our family will never forget even more meaningful. Thank! you!"

Each Ring, a Piece of Art:  Mr. Borden's Ring

"Looks good on the website but what will it really look like?  I asked myself the same question and went even further asking myself why in the world would I ever buy anything on the Internet, let along an expensive ring?

With a lot of patience from Stephen at HistoricalNames.com to get me past this (personal telephone calls from eight time zones away) I am very glad to say that what you see isn't even close to what you'll get.  The rings are absolutely exquisite!  If you have a family crest, as I did, but lost your ring or, as in my case getting one for a son's or daughter's 21st birthday, this is the place.

The last ring I had came from my grandfather, hand engraved by an extremely good engraver from Bailey, Banks and Bittle in Philadelphia, but doesn't hold a candle to the die stamped rings I just received for my son and daughter."

"Stephen, In these times of "the bottom line" where profit is the primary concern and the customer is just an end to the means regardless of the quality of the product or service it is very reassuring to see old fashion pride in the work of artisans such as yours and the personal extension of Customer Service excellence that you gave. The ring is a definite work of art and your willingness to work with me is appreciated more than you may ever realize. This was my first purchase but it is definitely not my last and I will definitely be referring you to my friends and family. Semper Fi."

Our Rings come in Three Different Colors

Red (Rose) * Yellow * White

These are not Cast Rings.  Why?

What's the Difference?  Cast vs. Die-Stamped Rings

Before deep engraving takes place there two main ways of manufacturing signet rings:

CAST RINGS - Cast rings are made by simply pouring molten gold into a mould. However cast gold like all cast metal is porous and this will lead to the ring wearing significantly quicker in comparison to a die-stamped ring.

DIE-STAMPED RINGS - The skilled and complex process of producing a die-stamped ring begins with a sheet of highly compressed gold, from which the flat profile of the signet ring is stamped. This stamping process is done under great weight, which in turn compresses the gold even further, making the gold incredibly dense, resulting in a much harder, stronger ring.

A skilled goldsmith then crafts the flat profile into a blank signet ring, which is polished, and finally engraved.

Not only is the signet ring considerably harder wearing, but also as the metal is so dense it leads to a more precise cut, and is therefore much better for engraving, giving your signet ring a sharper, more defined image.

The quality of a HistoricalNames.com Signet Ring renowned worldwide but we trust our engraving will not just last a lifetime but be passed on to future generations. This is why we only use the very best quality die-stamped signet rings for our engraving.

Why our White Gold Rings are not only Better but Safer

We make our European Style

White gold in Europe is made differently from that in the United States.  As you may know gold is (other than 24-carat gold) an alloy of a mixture of metals.  White gold is a mixture of gold and palladium which is an off shoot of platinum and silver.  With white gold we are changing the color of gold, which this may sound silly, is naturally gold in color.  European white gold is not the same color as US white gold.  In the US you can still use nickel in the alloy for white gold. Nickel does tend to give the gold an almost stainless steel look to it, but nickel is also poisonous and gives many people a very nasty allergic reaction.   For this reason, Europe has not been able to use nickel in the white gold alloy for over fifteen years.  In our opinion, European white gold is a much safer and better quality precious metal, but the color differences do need to be pointed out:

  • 9-karat white gold has a high silver content and therefore very silvery in color.

  • 14-karat white gold has more of a platinum look to it with a slight grayish hue.

  • 18-karat white gold does have a yellowish hue to it. 18-carat is often rhodium plated to mask this yellowish color. However we do not recommend rhodium plating rings as the rhodium plating will wear off over time.

About the Goldsmiths

With over 50 years combined experience of seal and deep hand engraving on signet rings and other products to a world wide clientele, including European, Middle Eastern and Asian Royalty, these goldsmiths have a treasured and widely acclaimed reputation for the quality of their craftsmanship and service.

All of the craftsmen have been traditionally trained using hand engraving tools and techniques virtually unchanged for many centuries. The youngest craftsmen having their skills handed down to them by senior craftsmen. Usually all craftsmen are fully trained in both gold and gemstone engraving. The goldsmiths are also qualified and fully experienced in die sinking, steel die engraving, copper plate engraving, relief engraving and hand (line) engraving. These artists are completely versed in the language of heraldry and are able to design coats of arms from the traditional written description known as blazon.

At HistoricalNames.com we are as proud of our relationship with these craftsmen as you are of your family heritage, this is reflected in the superb quality of all these rings.

Hi Stephen, I am the happiest woman alive!!!! You and your company have restored my faith in humanity! I arrived at the office this morning to find my parcel on my desk – I opened it with not too much trepidation – having seen the sneak preview – and am absolutely overwhelmed! Lindsay is going to be beside himself! The Sardonyx ring is truly even more perfect than I had imagined. After being so hesitant about doing this order by remote control, I am so encouraged and will certainly tell all my friends and colleagues about the experience. Stephen , once again thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are an asset to the company you work for! If you don’t have shares in it yet (or own it) you should!!!! I hope to do business with you again in the future. You and your lovely wife will also always be welcome in our home – we have a lovely family beach house on the cape coast if ever you want a holiday in these parts. Very Content, Nicky
J Burgess Kegan Maryland, USA Stephen, I can't begin to tell you how refreshing it was to transact business with both you and your company. In this time of E-mails, FAXes, and general lack of personal contact and service it was a delight to work with you. I am so pleased with the match you made in the crest ring made for my #2 son. Not only am I pleased but more importantly he is pleased. When it is time for #3's ring you will be hearing from me. In the meantime, I will be looking forward to hearing from you in regards to the crest cuff links. Thanks again for such a great job!
Jack & Cheryl Rischel Washington, USA I received a wonderful surprise and gift of a ring made by your company for my big 50th birthday. I was very impressed by the look, feel and fit of my ring. I was left speechless! - Jack I were very impressed first with the customer service Stephen provided to me....calling me at home early one morning to get the details of the order. Stephen understood the importance of me receiving the ring in time for Jack's birthday and ensured that I had it by the big day. In actuality, I received it a week earlier than I expected. I was also very impressed with the workmanship and quality of the ring. It is a truly exquisite piece of jewelry that we can hand down through the generations. I highly recommend this company and their products. - Cheryl
Alan Blair Connecticut, USA Stephen, I received the ring I ordered for my son today and it was absolutely OUTSTANDING. Thank you for helping me through the ordering process to make sure everything was just perfect. Very soon we will be ordering identical rings for every member of the family.
Alexander Abrams Maryland, USA I recently received my Family Crest Ring and am beyond satisfied. The engraving is beautiful and the quality is excellent. I am a very impatient person and was not looking forward to waiting the usual 4 to 6 weeks that most jewelers said it would take to make a family crest ring. Stephen was able to expedite the order and I received my ring within 11 days of my first contact with HistoricalNames.com. Definitely a great experience and I would use HistoricalNames.com again. Thanks for the great experience!!!

Amanda Roxburgh Fife, Great Britain

The ring I ordered is amazing! Very, very good quality and excellent service. I contacted Historical Names (Stephen) to see if they would make a ring for my son's 14th birthday within a very tight schedule. Indeed the ring came the night before his birthday. I was actually on the phone to my friend when it was delivered and can't tell you who was more excited. Anyway managed to keep it a secret for a whole 14 hours until my son got up the following day and he opened a present which had a box with a picture of kitchen scales on the front. Not impressed! However, he opened the box and pulled out reams of junk and found the ring in its own box. (Beautiful box) He is absolutely thrilled with the ring. Keeps getting a soft cloth and shining it up. We have shown everyone the ring over the last few days and they are all mightily impressed with it. Thank you so very much for all your help. I am more than delighted with the service and the product and will gladly order from you again and recommend you to family and friends.
