of Surnames:
Only a small number of surnames can be traced back to the person that
first used the surname. Tracing a name is complicated by clerical errors
throughout the time of record keeping, personal choices made by ancestors,
phonetic variations, etc.
Many surnames were based on where people
came from, or what occupation they held, or a descriptive nickname. Eventually
over time surnames became hereditary, and now with the explosive growth
of population, name changes aren't as common nor as easy.
