The Origin and Development of Heraldry

Heraldry is reckoned generally to have started in the middle of the 12th century.  Defensive Armor was improved to the extent that Knights were encased in full armor complete with helmet.  The only method of establishing the identity of such a figure was from the bearings borne on the Shield that he carried.  Initially, colors were used but soon symbols or "charges" came into operation.  Heralds too, came quickly on the scene as experts who kept records of such bearings and to whom they belonged.  Eventually, as heraldry blossomed, the heralds were involved in the Regulation, Creation and Recording of all Armorial Bearings.

Who used Armorial Bearings (Coats of Arms)?

Initially (circa 1150 AD) only the Higher nobility used Armorial bearings.  Gradually, the practice spread downwards through the various strata of Feudal society.  The Mediaeval Crusades did much to spread the usage and popularity of Armorial Bearings.

What is Heraldry?

Heraldry could be defined as a System of Scientific symbolism under official control as a means of identification of leading combatants in mediaeval warfare.  The 16th century saw the decline of Armor with increasing use of gunpowder and firearms.  Military heraldry had seen its golden age but Heraldry was now well embedded in the Class system and was set to continue and flourish over the centuries.
